Description
Documented in BIMCO's 2018 'Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships', a vessel was delayed from sailing for several days when an unrecognised virus on the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) prevented the crew from generating a passage plan. Initial infection was traced to a USB drive used to transfer chart updates.
Impact
The vessel was delayed at port for several days while the ECDIS was reimaged from clean media. No safety-of-navigation incident occurred.
