Description
In January 2016 Israel's Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz described an ongoing 'serious' cyber attack against the Israel Electric Authority, prompting widespread headlines about an attack on the national grid. The incident was later clarified as a ransomware infection on the regulatory authority's office IT — distinct from the grid operator IEC — that did not affect generation, transmission, or distribution systems.
Impact
Office systems at the Israel Electric Authority were taken offline for cleanup. There was no impact on electricity supply.
