Description
In July 2019 City Power Johannesburg, the municipal electricity utility serving Johannesburg's central business district, was hit by ransomware that encrypted databases, the customer prepaid-vending platform, and parts of the corporate website. The utility specifically disclosed that prepaid customers could not buy electricity vouchers during the outage.
Impact
Prepaid electricity sales were suspended for parts of the day and customer service systems were offline. Generation and distribution continued normally; customers with active credit were not affected.
