Description
Between 2011 and 2013, drug-trafficking organisations recruited hackers to compromise the IT systems of port operators at Antwerp in order to redirect and conceal containers carrying cocaine and heroin smuggled inside legitimate shipments. Initial access was via spear-phishing and later by physically planting hardware keyloggers inside the port operator's premises.
Impact
Authorities seized over a tonne of cocaine and heroin and €1.3 million in cash following raids tied to the operation. The port's container-tracking systems were manipulated to mark specific containers ready for early collection.
