Description
BIMCO's 2018 cyber-security guidelines document a case in which a ship's main application server was encrypted by ransomware that arrived through a phishing email opened on the captain's computer. The vessel's safety-related navigation systems were segmented and unaffected.
Impact
The vessel continued sailing using paper backups for cargo and stores documentation while shore IT rebuilt the affected server. No safety impact.
